The Merus and Bhang were sentenced to life imprisonment

On November 1, 2018, when police led by senior county security officials raided a magnificent residence in Kooje Estate in North Imenti Meru and captured the hidden bhang, the main suspect James Muthora (pseudonym Karinta) did not give in.

He wondered why the then Meru County Commissioner Wilfred Nyagwanga (now the Central Region Coordinator) and the then DCIO James Githinji were unfamiliar with him due to his deep relationship with law enforcement.

The other three suspects-Timothy Kinoti Kariaci, Joseph Ekeno Ekeno and Jacob Githae Mukunyu-were in Karinta's home and were identified by the prosecution as his workers.

Neighbors described Karinta as “the government itself,” although he is facing prosecution along with his wife Karimi Muthora and three other people.

After four years in court, Karinta and his wife were sentenced to life imprisonment after Senior Chief Magistrate Thomas Muraguri ruled that the prosecution had proved beyond doubt that the two were engaged in business.
